Question

We have a person who is running a magnesium level of 1.4 (range is 1.6 to 2.3 mg/Dl) for several weeks now.  She is taking an over the counter magnesium oxide, a 250 mg tablet 3 times a day, as advised by her doctor.
The PCP is asking me what we usually do in such cases.  What do you use when a more absorbable form of magnesium is required and at what dosage?

Answer

I would go with 3 Slow-Mag tablets twice a day and retest in 1 week.  —Christopher Case, MD
